The University

The University of British Columbia is a global centre for research.

We are consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world and were recently recognized as North America’s most international university.

UBC is the first university in Canada to develop a sustainable development policy—and as of 2018, the UBC’s Vancouver campus had achieved a 38% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below the 2007 baseline, despite a 32% growth in student population.

The Faculty of Applied Science

The applied sciences—architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, nursing, and city and community planning—cover a range of topics and technologies from robotics to health technologies to big data that can be applied to multiple sectors.

Our Research

UBC is a living laboratory where research is integrated into the operation of the university.

The UBC’s Vancouver campus is a city-scale testbed that can de-risk technologies and growth pathways for cities in Canada and worldwide. UBC Vancouver is a low-emissions, independent municipality of over 60,000 with its own utility and year-round residents with diverse demographics.

Applied Science research projects have helped increase innovation in mining, oil and gas, aerospace, health, real estate, city planning and many others.

Our research and development initiatives have hatched many successful start-ups. More than 150 companies have been launched through UBC research and through our business accelerator, Hatch.
